Background of the Study
Intercultural dialogue is a critical factor in shaping language use among diaspora communities. For Igbo speakers living outside Nigeria, engaging in intercultural dialogue necessitates the adaptation of traditional pragmatic strategies to accommodate diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds (Chukwu, 2023). These speakers often blend Igbo with the language of their host country, leading to a dynamic interplay of pragmatic markers, such as code-switching, indirectness, and culturally specific politeness forms. The resulting hybrid discourse serves not only to communicate effectively but also to preserve Igbo cultural identity in a multicultural environment. However, the pressure to conform to global communication standards can sometimes dilute these traditional pragmatic features, creating challenges in achieving clarity and mutual understanding. This study examines how intercultural dialogue influences the pragmatic strategies employed in Igbo among diaspora communities, analyzing conversational patterns, media interactions, and social gatherings. The aim is to assess the extent to which traditional pragmatic markers are maintained or transformed in intercultural contexts and to propose strategies for supporting effective and culturally sensitive communication.

Statement of the Problem
Intercultural dialogue among Igbo diaspora communities poses significant challenges to maintaining traditional pragmatic strategies. The blending of Igbo with the dominant language in host countries may lead to inconsistencies and ambiguities in communication (Chukwu, 2023). This phenomenon risks undermining the cultural authenticity of Igbo discourse, as modern influences replace time-honored pragmatic markers. Limited research has been conducted on how these intercultural interactions affect the use of pragmatic strategies, leaving a gap in our understanding of their evolution in a globalized context.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document pragmatic strategies used in Igbo diaspora dialogues.

  • To analyze the influence of intercultural interactions on these strategies.

  • To recommend methods for preserving traditional pragmatic markers.

Research Questions

  • How does intercultural dialogue affect pragmatic strategies in Igbo?

  • What challenges arise in maintaining traditional markers?

  • What strategies can support effective intercultural communication?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of intercultural dialogue on Igbo pragmatic strategies among diaspora communities, providing insights into preserving cultural identity and enhancing effective communication across cultures (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Igbo language use among diaspora communities and does not extend to monolingual or domestic contexts.

Definitions of Terms
